Understanding Women - The Definitive Guide to Meeting, Dating and Dumping, if Necessary.
Author: Romy Miller
Reviewer: Alice George
Reviewers rating: 1/10 User rating: n/a
Synopsis: Forget rocket science, women are easily the most puzzling and difficult subject known, if you’ll pardon the pun, to man. Men have tried for years to understand the fair sex, but unfortunately, making many mistakes along the way. Romy Miller has decided it’s about time someone helped these poor men out. With a wealth of dating literature behind her, Romy Miller also has the added bonus of being a woman. The advantage? She knows women, knows what makes them tick, knows what they need in a man and knows what dating and love means to a girl - Miller believes that by following her expert advice, you, as a man, can not only succeed with women and find the perfect date, but you can unlock the secret to understanding them as well. ‘Go from loser to lover in no time flat’ simply by understanding a bit of basic biology. If you’re ready to try doing things the easy way, then Understanding Women – The Definitive Guide to Meeting, Dating and Dumping, if Necessary is the place to begin... Reviewers comments: To its credit, aesthetically, this book is well devised. A simple cover, with the most basic model of a woman displayed upon it accompanied by a title that expresses very frankly what one can hope to find within its pages. It is very welcoming and looks almost like light relief compared to the enormous volume of contradicting and complicated advice on offer about dating, love, matchmaking and finding the perfect partner out there. Simplicity is the way forward right? You’re in for a nasty surprise. Overall, the book reads like a crazy woman on a power trip. First person pronouns are dotted about everywhere; take for example, ‘I don’t care...’ Since when was this book about her? Unfortunately for her, Miller is not the one men are trying to impress, or figure out (although, if you were a psychologist reading this, you might be quite concerned about her mental health) and the fact that this unknown source of dire information cares not whether they do this or that probably doesn’t bother them in the slightest. Nor should it. It is not a book that reads well. The grammar is poor, the sentence structure is even worse and it is often difficult to understand where one point begins and another finishes. By peppering the text with slang terms like ‘gonna’ and ‘ helluva’ (and I’m not even entirely sure what the latter means) all Romy Miller succeeds in doing is being irritating instead of coming across as flippant and sassy. Unfortunately, it gets worse. The author, at times, can be quite vulgar. Using terms like ‘bullcrap’, ‘big dick’, ‘big tits’ and depreciating terms like ‘chicks’ throughout actually comes across as being quite offensive. It is not a good thing in a book about how to attract women to be discussing them and their desires in such crass terms. The last thing it does is demand respect for the opposite sex. Completing such delightful chapters with gems like ‘you’re sure to get laid sooner or later’ says it all, really. The book switches between whether it wants to be a man basher or actually a man itself. Sometimes it suggests being sensitive towards women and their needs, other times it simply writes them off as being completely nuts. I am concerned for Romy Miller and where exactly her advice is coming from. She claims ‘I know that a lot of guys are interested in me, but for some reason, they won’t make a move’ and I worry it’s because they think she might be some kind of psycho. Why do I believe this? Well, for all the reasons outlined above, but also because she believes that women judge how well a man will look after and care for her in marriage and child rearing, simply by looking at his teeth. Within this book, there are snippets of good advice, hence my giving it one positive point in rating. The chapter entitled ‘mind your manners’ contains a couple of really good, failsafe ideas about how to go about the subject of past sexual experience and encounters with your date. Such things are often overlooked and it is unfortunate that this advice is encased in such poor grammar and crazy ideas. Finally, the longest chapter by far in the book is devoted to fashion and how to dress. It’s not particularly great fashion advice, but it’s certainly more comprehensive than the rest of the ideas discussed. Perhaps Romy Miller should consider changing her profession. Who Should Buy It: Any man who believes that women are either psychotic, or at the very least a complete copy of their stereotype – this book won’t help you pick up any lady friends, but it will certainly cement you, with the author (despite claiming to be dated by various different men throughout the book – yeah, right) in the chauvinistic, un-dateable category. If you are a man and you’re just looking for a bit of female company or are genuinely inquisitive about dating and love, I wouldn’t advise reading this unless you’re emotionally stable enough to not run, screaming for your life, the next time you lay eyes upon the opposite sex. In fact, if any man at all should ever read this book and take it as literal, well, evolution might just grind to a halt completely. Congratulations Romy Miller, you’ve just wiped out mankind.
