Everyone of a certain age who has been in a club knows that creepy older bloke whose sole aim is to deliver lines to women. Here is Richard La Ruina - the man who coaches them under the guise of 'training pick up artists'. While a lot of his tips are admirable - the section on body language is particularly helpful to anyone who is shy and finding it difficult to make friends, let alone meet women - the concept of using cold reading and (in the author's own words) 'Derren Brown-style mind tricks' to get women to sleep with you seems ever so slightly sinister to this reviewer.

The book is interspersed with sections entitled 'Evolution of a Natural'. The point of these would ostensibly be to show the reader what he could achieve should he put in sufficient dedication to following the rules and tips set out by the author, but instead come across, increasingly throughout the book, as a vehicle for the author to boast about sexual conquests and dating successes. A chance encounter with a Russian model in a bus stop, who he then apparently had sex with 20 minutes later, was a particular highlight.

However, despite all of this, and despite the creepy overtones to many of his pick up tips (his assertion that he could 'get any woman to fall in love with him' just by his choice of words but wouldn't because of his morals seems downright scary), I actually enjoyed the writing. Richard La Ruina seems like a genuinely nice person, the sort of guy you'd want to go out and try and pick up women with. This is lucky for him really, as it's his job to be likable and friendly to women he is trying to date and men he is trying to find matches for. I can see how this man holds the attention of his target women (often referred to as 'HCs, or Hot Chicks') in clubs across London. He genuinely seems to respect the women he is constantly chasing, and advises similar respect from his pick-up artist (PUA) charges. He offers tips such as not coercing a girl into having sex with you when she offers physical resistance, but at the same time dedicates an entire chapter to knowing when a potential target with a boyfriend will sleep with you based on whether or not she is 'into' her other half. It is unfortunate that despite the author's morals and obvious concern for his conquests' wellbeing, many of those who read and follow his advice will not do so.

To his credit, Richard La Ruina does not use every possible opportunity to shamelessly plug his website outside of the synopsis and (admittedly over prominent) the 'about the author' section. While he repeatedly mentions his 'customers' and 'boot camps' repeatedly, there is no guilt felt or implied about reading his book and getting his tips on the cheap without attending one of his one-on-one dating coaching sessions.

Who should read it:
I would recommend this book to those who lack confidence with not just the fair sex, but those who find it difficult to connect with anyone. Those who read it for that purpose would have to see past the boasting and tips on 'closing' (i.e kissing someone, or getting their number) and pick up the genuinely helpful tips on how to be more confident around people.

Failing that, the target audience seems to be those men who like to read about other men's dating exploits. It seems to me that the kind of man who would put in the kind of time and effort, not to mention the money, that Richard La Ruina put in to learning the techniques he puts forth here would find other ways to learn these tips and tricks. It took the author years of trying to pick up 20 women every night and trawling the internet for similarly minded pick up artists. Will many potential daters have the same dedication?

Conclusion? Well written and useful, if a little boastful at times.
