The book's first success is its appearance. Big, bold lettering spells out an equally bold title that captures your attention and its placement on a simplistic, but bright, green background sealed with a smiling pair of bright red lips makes it look fun and inviting. Finished with a promise that Leil Lowndes is 'an international bestselling author' and I’m hooked already. Please reel me in!

As if you needed MORE convincing of this books worth, along comes a quirky blurb and a suitably extended introduction. As you open the book, on the inside cover is a cutesy little message about the author, calling her a 'shyness survivor' (thus registering her equal with her readers) before affirming a couple of her accomplishments as a ‘communications expert’.

Unfortunately, it starts to waver a little from there. If I hadn’t been so convinced by everything the book had thus far offered me (and this is literally all from the cover), I probably would have slammed it shut there and then! Irritatingly, Lowndes keeps referring to her friends, 'my friend Karen', 'I have a friend named Rob' etc. I would assume in picking up this book you would be looking for advice, not wanting to read someone's biography. Furthermore, thus far it has implied the art of communication is an easy one, but then Lowndes goes on to specify exactly how much research she’s done, how many seminars and lectures she’s attended and so on. I feel my heart sinking. Is this going to be ANOTHER one of those dating books that contradicts everything it says?

But I persevered and boy am I glad I did! All of this afore mentioned 'research' is condensed in such a way that it supports the various techniques she suggests. What's more, it’s all cited and referenced, so if you wanted to do any research yourself, all the information is right there, in the back pages for your enjoyment. It makes you feel well looked after as a reader to know that the author is so considerate and has out so much effort into her work. This is clearly one devoted and talented woman.

Each chapter outlines a technique that is summarised at the end and given a nickname. This makes it memorable and easy and doesn't feel intimidating in any way. As far as intimidation goes, there is none at all in this book – there are no pressuring chapters about how to capture the perfect date or how to make someone fall in love with you, it's just a book about communication and the rest, it implies, will follow. How easy is that?

As for the stories about her friends I mentioned earlier – they actually become quite endearing and enjoyable. They are clearly a literary device that helps you to remember things and to make various points more clearly. You will find yourself eagerly anticipating the next faux pas or success Leil Lowndes will describe.

Lowndes is clearly a very smart woman. She makes the reader feel good inside with lovely little phrases like 'beautiful tropical bird that captures everyone's heart' and then while you’re feeling so lovely and special, she quickly slips in a technique and you think, easy!

Overall, this book is a fantastic confidence builder. Even if you’re not in need of the advice yourself but are interested in researching communication, whether for pleasure, for a talk you’re about to give your employee's or so you can help out a friend, this book is a cracking good read that leaves you feeling on top the world and unstoppable.

Who Should Buy It:

Genuinely anyone. You need to be able to read between the lines a little and not take her word as law as the majority of the book refers to techniques in the business world - but if you’re looking for somewhere to get started, this is definitely the place to do it! It is unfortunate that it seems to be directed at Americans (so if your American, get down to the book shop now!) but that doesn't hinder the advice offered at all. I wish all readers the same educational and fun experience I gained from reading this book.
